What does the new update to iOS14.5 mean for digital marketing?
The answer isn’t as clear-cut as you might expect. iOS14.5 doesn’t have the same type of hard-and-fast rules as macOS Mojave (when it debuted earlier this year), which granted, Apple has worked out a good amount of privacy options on the operating system. That doesn’t mean iOS14.5 isn’t still a mixed bag. Apple is creating new privacy settings and tweaking others. Although iOS 14.5 is less detailed than macOS Mojave, you should still take note of how it will impact you. So, How Does Apple Make iOS’ Privacy Options More Accessible? Apple overhauled many of its privacy settings with iOS 12. When you go to the main settings menu on your iPhone or iPad (as long as your device is on, of course), you can find a new set of settings. Tap on Privacy.
How this affects your Facebook Ads
Apple iOS14.5’s new privacy settings will impact your Facebook Ads and give you more control over the user data you collect. Go to your Facebook Ads Manager page, find your ads and click on Manage ad campaigns. You will see a list of ads you have recently run. Then click on the Edit tab. You will now see a list of settings. Click on Limit Ad Tracking. Once you click on the Update Tracking Settings, click the Delete All button. This will mean your ads will no longer be able to be targeted using personal information and Apple iOS will now see it as non-personal information. What this does mean is you now will need to provide more details about the ad you are running to your advertisers. Note that this feature is currently limited to Ads running on iOS and MacOS devices.
Email marketing will be impacted by this new iOS14.5 update. You will need to look into your email platform and assess how it will be impacted. If you’re like many of us, you love the platform that email newsletter service MailChimp is on.
How this affects your Google Ads
Apple iOS14.5 includes updated privacy features to safeguard user privacy. This will affect all the apps you use on your iPhone, including your Google Ads. When you install this update, you will be prompted to review the security of your information on the app store. On a related note, Apple has added some new privacy restrictions to their Apple Business Chat, which should apply to your Google Ads as well. Apple is not the only brand taking on privacy. Recently, Facebook released a new privacy feature to ensure users are in control of their information. With Apple iOS14.5, your customer data is protected from other apps and websites which might not adhere to Apple’s strict rules.
Options for mitigating the impact of iOS14.5 on digital marketing campaigns
Through its recently announced iOS14.5, Apple has broken ground by altering the settings for one of its core apps. In addition, it has finally made it easier to use Siri to reply to messages directly from your email. Whether you are looking to access the settings within the app, or if you need to adjust settings on an Apple device, these tips can help you avoid hitting brick walls when you attempt to take advantage of the updates. Consider the iOS14.5 update as just a starting point, not a final statement, for the ways iOS and Google Ads could impact your marketing strategy. For the long-term, take a look at some of the other tools and systems you have to choose from.
